Last night I made a recipe that I remember my mom making when things were 'tight.' I had no idea how my kids would react, but I remember liking it, so I thought I would give it a try.... everyone who had it, liked it!!!!! (My oldest wasn't feeling that great and ended up not eating dinner but she said that it smelled good and she'd try it today.) I added a side of canned corn and sliced bread to round out the meal. So, 'what was it?' you ask....I don't remember the official name, we just always called it "Recipe." Now, before I share the recipe for Recipe, I want to share how much it cost to feed all seven of us dinner...$7.16!!!! (that includes the canned corn, but not the bread....a local store donated a bunch of bread to our church this weekend so I grabbed a loaf.) And here's the kicker....There's enough leftovers of Recipe, that we can have it another night this week, or I can freeze it for later. So dinner for 7 actually cost $3.21 (plus 75cents for the corn.) Such a success all the way around!
and now the recipe....
1.5 lbs ground beef
2 - 8oz cans tomato sauce
half an onion, chopped (can use dried onion flakes or powder to taste)
1/3 cup worchestire sauce (I probably used a little more b/c I didn't measure it)
a squirt or 2 of ketchup
1 lb pasta, cooked
Saute onions in oil of your choice, add beef. When meat is done cooking, add remaining ingredients (except pasta) and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Add pasta and serve.
You can add green peppers, diced tomatoes, or whatever other veggie you'd like and make it a one pot meal, but I thought I would keep it simple the first time. ;)
